SAC BEE: HOWARD JARVIS TAXPAYERS WERE BOUGHT SACRAMENTO With new campaign finance reports revealing a huge payment to the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association from opponents of Prop. 35, Sacramento Bee columnist Dan Walters today stated the once-respected Jarvis groups ballot recommendation on Prop. 35 was "bought". Proposition 35 on the November ballot simply gives state and local governments the flexibility to use private engineers and architects to complete highway, rail transit and other projects on time and on budget with a taxpayer savings of $2.5 billion each year. Campaign finance documents indicate the Jarvis groups slate mailer received a $350,000 payment from the No on 35 committee. Prop. 35 is endorsed by 20 local and statewide taxpayer organizations including the California Taxpayers Association. In todays column discussing slate mailers, Walters says three of the Jarvis groups positions were "bought", including their unbelievable opposition to Prop. 35 which ran counter to their long-standing support for contracting with the private sector. "This confirms the suspicions of those of us working for efficient use of taxpayer dollars," said Carol Evans, senior policy advisor for the California Taxpayers Association. "By putting public and private engineers on the job to get much-needed projects designed and built, Prop. 35 will allow us to deliver projects in a timely way and save us from budget-eating delays. "That is precisely why an economic study found Prop. 35 will save taxpayers $2.5 billion each year. It is not surprising then that hundreds of thousands of dollars changed hands to get the Jarvis group to turn their back on taxpayers with their position on Prop. 35." More information on the measure is available at www.YesProp35.com. Taxpayer organizations supporting Prop. 35 include the California Taxpayers Association, Alliance of California Taxpayers and Involved Voters, Butte County Citizens for Better Government, California Taxpayer Protection Committee, Contra Costa Taxpayers Assn, Fullerton Assn of Concerned Taxpayers, Kern County Taxpayers Assn, League of Placer County Taxpayers, Marin United Taxpayers Assn, National Tax Limitation Committee, Orange County Taxpayers Assn, Peoples Advocate, Responsible Voters for Lower Taxes, San Diego County Taxpayers Assn, Santa Barbara County Taxpayers Assn, Shasta County Taxpayers Assn, Sonoma County Taxpayers Assn, United Californians for Tax Reform, Ventura County Taxpayers Assn and Waste Watchers. |
